You need the USB to boot Shimboot no matter what. This is a limitation of the RMA shims.
However, it is possible to copy the rootfs onto your internal storage, and with that you are able to remove the USB after everything is booted.

also, when i do fdisk -1 it says change partition table. (im on octopus)
