The tool tag is a Biological extension to the identification information section of the FGDC standard.
Definition tool: "Tools, models, or statistical procedures that the data set is intrinsically bound to and are available for use in analyzing the data set."

tool has a substantial overlap with the ISO 19115-2 section acquisitionInformation but not an exact match. Definition MI_AcquisitionInfomation: "designations for the measuring instruments, the platform carrying them, and the mission to which the data contributes."

I have found the "-3/mac" XSD for "Metadata for Acquisition", so it did migrate to ISO 19115-3. However I have not found how it plugs in to the base yet as it is not included in the ISO documentation. It will just take a bit of exploring.

I have used this section, though rarely, to document a data set that really only has value when used in conjunction with an application. An example is a coded ASCII file, in which each column is an attribute, interpreted by the application.

It's interesting and complicating that MI_AcquisitionInfomation did not survive the migration from ISO 19115-2 to ISO 19115-1. I have not found a reason for the omission yet. While it's fun to speculate, I'll leave that out for the moment and contact Jackie and/or Ted for any insight.

Our options are:

  • include the FGDC tools elements into mdJson/mdTranslator
  • include ISO 19115-2's eight MI_AcquisitionInfomation classes into mdJson/mdTranslator and map the FGDC into these
  • ignore this section
