In addition, if this request is to be unified, the following characters should restore the v1 JP glyphs to replace the TW/HK glyphs, so as not to waste time doing adjustments.
Unicode | Character | Notes |
---|---|---|
U+7B01 | 笁 | |
U+7B1A | 笚 | |
U+7B1D | 笝 | Adjust the bottom 囗 component, see this reply |
U+7B44 | 筄 | |
U+7B58 | 筘 | Adjust the bottom right 口, see this reply |
U+7B63 | 筣 | |
U+7B78 | 筸 | |
U+7B82 | 箂 | |
U+7BD8 | 篘 | |
U+7BE2 | 篢 | |
U+7BFB | 篻 | |
U+7BFF | 篿 | |
U+7C0A | 簊 | |
U+7C1D | 簝 | |
U+7BA3 | 箣 | |
U+7C35 | 簵 |
Note: 篻 (U+7BFB) is to be restored for HK only, TW should remain to be adjusted.
I currently do not have the list for Serif, but keep in mind that if this request is to be accepted, I'd rather have the v1 JP glyphs restored where appropriate than to waste time adjusting the TW/HK glyphs.
EDIT: Removed 筘 from the table based on feedback. EDIT 2: Added back 筘, but this time the glyph should be adjusted after restoring.
After verifying, 笁筄筣箂箣篘篢篿簊簝 is misclassified in my comment and changed from "unchanged" to "need to be changed/restored" category; 筘 I personally think shouldn't be restored due to slight difference in 口 with current CN which is better than v1 JP (see pic below), however ⺮ can be copied from v1 JP; 筸 if restored should replace current CN.

Well this time I think I have to ask Adobe to restore the v1 JP glyph for 筘 (uni7B58-JP), but modify it to actually move up slightly the bottom horizontal stroke in the bottom right 口 part for balance, as circled.
So the restored JP glyph will look like this:
And the masters will look like this:
Well, I previously mentioned that the v1 JP glyph of 笝 (U+7B1D) should be restored to replace the TW glyph, but recently I found out the design looks a bit ugly because the 囗 component is too wide.
So I suggest that it should also be adjusted such that the 囗 component is a little slimmer (for both masters) and the 又 component inside is shifted upwards (for the ExtraLight master only), similar to my mockup. This will make it look more professional.
Please also note that in the Reference Glyphs published by the Education Bureau of Hong Kong Government, the dots are supposed to touch the leftward throwing stroke.
The one where the dot is detached from the top is only found in the fonts produced by the OGCIO of Hong Kong Government.
Commerically produced fonts for Hong Kong market don't detach the dot.
Example from PingFang HK (Apple):
Example from Songti TC (Apple):
Example from LiSong Pro (Apple, Hong Kong local font developer, 1990s):
There do not seem to be strong grounds for maintaining a huge set of extra glyphs where the dot is separated from the top stroke.
I would like to formally request to unify ⺮ component to JP form for all regions.
國字標準字體 does not specify ⺮ should be disconnected
There is no evidence that ⺮ component is specifically required to be disconnected in 國字標準字體 or in any of the official Taiwan MOE documents. The demonstrated ⺮ is a Regular script font, which is different from printed Ming/Song/Hei fonts for all other regions. Screenshot are as follow:
Action to take
After a basic check, it is determined that at least 200 glyphs from TW can be removed if this request is accepted. (Only checked with TW version for now)
A few discrepency between glyphs which if resolved might add or remove some glyphs:
And at least 90 glyphs in the BMP which need modification of TW glyph (not counting non-BMP HKSCS characters).
Light blue are glyphs with only TW/HK, red are characters to take note (筳 might be modified for CN if https://github.com/adobe-fonts/source-han-sans/issues/327 is resolved, 籐 is difference in 氺), and green is already conforming to suggestion of this issue (reported in https://github.com/adobe-fonts/source-han-sans/issues/362).
Among those, these can be restored from v1 JP:
笁笚笝筄筣箂箣篘篢篻(HK)篿簊簝簵
This will be a hard request to accept, but with the benefit of 210 free-up CIDs, visually more pleasing characters, while still maintaining consistency with 國字標準字體, I hope Source Han project will accept this request (as many in the Chinese community already has voiced out in the past time). The same thing already happened in v2.000 with 辶 component, so I don't see any reason why this can't be implemented.
