Request: Support for Fulah and Hausa #67

Open AshtarBalynestjar opened 4 years ago

AshtarBalynestjar commented 4 years ago

I hinted at this earlier in the eng thread (#64). According to Ethnologue, Fulah as has 29.8 million users (adding up all varieties of the macrolanguage), and Hausa has 63.4 million, counting first and second language speakers.

The required set of special characters for both languages is very similar. Fulah and Hausa both use the letters Ɓɓ Ɗɗ Ƴƴ. In addition, Fulah also uses Ŋŋ (#64) (and Ɲɲ in some orthographies) and Hausa also uses Ƙƙ.

Here's the full list of characters needed:

Ɓ U+0181 : LATIN CAPITAL LETTER B WITH HOOK ɓ U+0253 : LATIN SMALL LETTER B WITH HOOK Ɗ U+018A : LATIN CAPITAL LETTER D WITH HOOK ɗ U+0257 : LATIN SMALL LETTER D WITH HOOK Ƴ U+01B3 : LATIN CAPITAL LETTER Y WITH HOOK ƴ U+01B4 : LATIN SMALL LETTER Y WITH HOOK Ŋ U+014A : LATIN CAPITAL LETTER ENG ŋ U+014B : LATIN SMALL LETTER ENG Ɲ U+019D : LATIN CAPITAL LETTER N WITH LEFT HOOK ɲ U+0272 : LATIN SMALL LETTER N WITH LEFT HOOK Ƙ U+0198 : LATIN CAPITAL LETTER K WITH HOOK ƙ U+0199 : LATIN SMALL LETTER K WITH HOOK

Keeping track of the current support within Source Serif:

code point character name supported in AL5
U+0181 Ɓ LATIN CAPITAL LETTER B WITH HOOK
U+0253 ɓ LATIN SMALL LETTER B WITH HOOK
U+018A Ɗ LATIN CAPITAL LETTER D WITH HOOK
U+0257 ɗ LATIN SMALL LETTER D WITH HOOK
U+01B3 Ƴ LATIN CAPITAL LETTER Y WITH HOOK
U+01B4 ƴ LATIN SMALL LETTER Y WITH HOOK
U+014A Ŋ LATIN CAPITAL LETTER ENG (✔)
U+014B ŋ LATIN SMALL LETTER ENG (✔)
U+019D Ɲ LATIN CAPITAL LETTER N WITH LEFT HOOK
U+0272 ɲ LATIN SMALL LETTER N WITH LEFT HOOK
U+0198 Ƙ LATIN CAPITAL LETTER K WITH HOOK
U+0199 ƙ LATIN SMALL LETTER K WITH HOOK

Which shape of Eng/eng is preferred for these languages?

@frankrolf most languages that use Ŋ and Ɲ mostly use the n-form of their uppercase.

There are a few Fulfulde/Pulaar/Pular books on http://www.dlir.org/alma-e-books.html

For example:

Balde, Moodi Usmaani Parage. 1996. Gimɗi ngurndan e tama’u: poémes de la vie et de l’espoir. Guinea.

Diagne, Mountaga. 199?. Ngulloori. Senegal.
