This is highly debatable, but in my opinion we should be end and commit a modal type state if the user clicks on the canvas off the layer, just like we do with vector edit mode. Besides consistency, the advantage of this is that people don't have to figure out the magic key combination to dismiss the edit mode, which is currently incredibly obscure and confusing.
