hey, cool article, just letting you know that you didn't have to write your own parser - there's a python module called mcstatus that can query minecraft servers, both java edition and bedrock
if you're okay with waiting ten weeks for results, sure
pretty sure that "whatever this is" is russian encoded in KOI-7
The “whatever this is” is a GDS - a system used by airlines to coordinate information globally. It’s quite ancient by tech standards but used at a scale you wouldn’t imagine
Wow, great job!
Come check out bonkcraft, would love some tips on how to improve it.
Woah! I've tried something like this before, I didn't get as far as this though. Only scanned 2 million 1.1.1.1/0 ip addresses i think (took like 2 hours)
Oh wow, this takes me back. When we were building the underlying auth system for minecraftforum.net we initially toyed with the idea of using server stats to display your server in realtime on the forums and wiki.
When we eventually launched mcserverlist.net to follow, we switched to a poll method and ended up building infra to check every Minecraft server's status each minute.
So glad to see this kind of exploration is still going on!
I believe I saw you on my logs. Good on ya.
This is so cool! Thanks for the good read :)

Very neat work! Could you share more of the most popular mod list? I'm curious as someone who's interested in making a game in this genre.
Hi folks! Thanks for all the interesting comments - I'm so surprised that this blogpost has gotten so much attention.
I've been asked a couple times for the mod data in public and in private, so here it is!
@adrian154 I guess that's what happens when you hit the front page of hacker news!

A Census of Minecraft Servers
Did you know that one person can scan the entire (IPv4) Internet? I searched all four billion IP addresses for running Minecraft servers. Here are the results.
