Establish unit tests for python functions #32

So far, there are no unit tests existent to verify the functionality of the used functions even after code changes. Goal of this issue is to establish unit tests in multiple steps:

Commonly used functions
Functions that must run on clusters/servers
rarely used functions (or only used in pipelines)
