I think there is a sort of moral imperative to have things do approximately what they say they do when creating a virtual world.
As a parallel, consider the swastika and accompanying Nazi arm-band. Any unparseable symbol that comes with a nice story is always going to be treated as if it has the meaning that the story says it has. Ultimately, of course, history will have some other verdict on what the real meaning of the symbol is.
