I don't think a slideshow widget is necessary. Most major websites no longer do slideshows anymore either. You could but why sit their waiting to see content flick through a slideshow.

If the real problem to solve is photo albums I would suggest having a photo albums solution. Where photos are shown on the page in a thumbnail view and clicking an image opens up a image viewer similar too https://fancyapps.com/fancybox/3/ (see first demo)

I agree, traditional slideshows as a menu are a practical fail. It was a photo slideshow banner that prompted me, cycling though event photos as a banner.

Photo album is a better issue to solve. - which could be full with - and cycle like a slide show... or be thumbnail and hover or click. updating ticket and shelving for future rainy days when oyu have the time or it's demanded.
