Character stripping/cleanup does not seem to be working

One book had "◇ ◇ ◇", which should have been dropped, and smart quotes that are not getting replaced.

There was also this, note the last two sentences that are just punctuation:

 > Text splitted to sentences.

Another book sent this to TTS, where the ellipses should have been caught and removed:

but . . . . [sigh]
