Cannot include colons in search string

If I include a colon ( ":" ) in the address bar, it will not perform a search. This prevents advanced search operators (e.g. cache:foo.com) from working in the address bar. Have tried to do this with a search engine prefix (e.g. "g cache:foo.com") and by placing the operator later in the search string (e.g. "g this is a test site:foo.com"), and none of these combinations work.
