Hi all,

is there already a way to use the data from OpenSeaMap. If not, it would be great to have these maps as vector maps available in Navit.

Also topographic maps or the ÖPNV maps would be great to have in navit.

Hi Lars,

I had a quick look at the OpenSeaMap project, but they don't seem to provide the datas some kind of "source" format.

One option would be to try the garmin map, since we already have a garmin driver ( i don't know the status of it tho, haven't used it in years).

If the garmin map is usable by Navit, then we would only need to create a "boat" profile.

The other downloadable map formats I found were all binary and, it seems, proprietary.

If you want to investigate a bit by yourself, please share your findings, and please come chat with us on IRC if you need help.

Replying to [comment:1 http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/user:kazer]:

They don't need to - they use the OpenStreetMap database. From their FAQ:

-OpenSeaMap is a subproject of OpenStreetMap and uses its database.*

They simply add special tags to the OSM database. The tags are documented in the OSM wiki: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OpenSeaMap/Seamark_Objects

So as far as I can see, the best solution would be to extend maptool to process these tags.

However, we'd need someone with experience in sea maps and navigation to decide what information makes sense for us.

First of all it would be great to have the sea mark objects being dispayed. Also you would not need too many information from the land side, the further away from the water the less information you need.

In my opinion for the navigation it would be a good start to have waypoint navigation with straight ways between the points.
