Route Planning: EV-Friendly Scenic Cruising in North Central Washington

Exploring the growing Plug-In NCW network

The Big Picture

In 2005, the Port of Chelan County in Washington state gathered a consortium of public and private entities with a mission in mind, to promote eco-friendly tourism throughout the beautiful national forests in north central Washington state. The program's been a resounding success, with aa route of 14 well-located charger stations with 49 connections, ranging from Level 1 to Level 3. The effort was so successful that it was spun off in 2011, and now pursues a number of objectives, from providing incentives for businesses to install charger stations to hosting events promoting the benefits of EV ownership. But we're preaching to the choir here. Let's take a closer look at the 14 stations now online.

Note: EVTO uses data you provide in Settings and My Cars to improve the accuracy of its predictions. Your mileage may vary.

ID [f5js120dbpp6s6u2i06tgk] and the PIN [1234]

I assembled this round trip based on a network of haL2 (high-amperage L2) chargers promoted by Plug-In North Central Washington.

I initially created the round trip from Seattle - Manzana WA Country Inn, and EVTO automatically included a charger stop in Burlington WA, which was reasonable.

I then added all of the waypoints on the outbound leg, and reoptimized. Initially, I did not manually establish any charging time at any of the stops.

Upon reoptimization, EVTO removed the Burlington SC (good), but added the Ellensburg WA supercharger, well off the route (bad). I think "OK, it doesn't know I'm planning to use one of the available waypoints for charging, so I'll manually set it myself and reoptimize, which should remove the Ellensburg automatic charging stop."

I select the Wenatchee Convention Center (southeast corner of the route), which is a CHAdeMO L3 charger. I adjust it to 90 minutes, which should be more than enough, reoptimize, but Ellensburg SC is not removed from the route.

Then I look more closely at the individual waypoints after reoptimizing, and I notice that in fact EVTO has added some charging time at some of them, which I didn't expect. And the Waypoint Inspector tells me that there's no charging time at the Wenatchee Convention Center, even though I spec'd 90 minutes.

  • It should be possible to do this drive without diverting to the Ellensburg SC
  • If a (non-SC) charging waypoint is on a route, does EVTO utilize it during optimization passes?
  • In a scenario with multiple non-SC charging options, if I manually edit a stop to include a longer stop for charging, that should tell EVTO that my requested stop/charging time is of a higher priority than any other options.

1.2.0 (11) Try this trip with the current release. As noted in the previous comment, every single stop is a charging opportunity. After selecting Optimize Routing, I get the 'Route Not Found' dialog, 'There is no known route through Superchargers!'. Touching OK does not dismiss the dialog. Touching Cancel does escape.

Touching OK does not dismiss the dialog. Touching Cancel does escape.

This will be addressed with the new optimization dialog. Just use Cancel right now.

v 1.2.0 (15) Trip ID [f5js120dbpp6s6u2i06tgk] PIN [1234] Importing this trip, then Optimizing, hangs the progress dialog in Selecting Superchargers.

This may be an unrealistic scenario, as the original trip had all of the non-SC charging waypoints added as a sort of tour. I optimized the trip and (an earlier version of) EVTO added the SC, which clearly was not necessary, since it had all of these other charging options.

If I cancel, then delete the Ellensburg SC, then optimize routing, it still hangs in the Selection Superchargers step.

Ideally, Optimize Routing should recognize that there's no need to add any superchargers to segment 1 of this Trip.

This is an interesting trip. It hangs on me too. Will need to figure out why.
