On my Ubuntu-MATE 20.04 today (2020-10-06) I got an update of GIMP to a new 2.10.22 via the ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/gimp (not a snap), surprised I went to the GIMP.org website and it is not yet announced nor released on their download page but I found that the .tar.bz2 is already online at https://download.gimp.org/mirror/pub/gimp/v2.10/
Just to let you know as your appimage is 2.10.21
