Halibut Ages:

Halibut:

Region (GOA, AI, Bering Sea):

Hi Ned and Duane,

I received this data request and was wondering if GAP has future thoughts on including halibut ages in GAP's database. Thanks, -Nancy

"I have made data requests for halibut ages in the past, ( https://www.iphc.int/form/data-request ) but we don't end up getting all of the info and variables that you get in the specimen table and also it makes it hard to quickly include halibut in analyses across species. There is waiting involved in making data requests, etc. I talked to Bob Lauth about including halibut ages once, but we didn't get it done before he retired. We have halibut lengths in our database! I get that the difference is that while we collect the ages, IPHC ages them. Still, we collected them and it would be nice to automatically have them."

Hi Nancy,

This is the first time I'm hearing that someone might find it useful for halibut ages to be included in our database. I don't know what sort of agreements/MOUs might be involved in this level of interagency cooperation, but I can look into the possibility. One correction to the above statements is that we actually don't collect the otoliths from halibut. Those otolith collections are done by IPHC samplers that participate in our surveys. Thus, the IPHC handles the collection, management, and storage of the otoliths, as well as the aging and management of the age data. The AFSC's only part in the process is providing the space on the research platform.

I suggest that the request for Halibut ages are directed to IPHC. It is very difficult to keep the database up to date when the data comes from different agency,

Nancy,

I agree with Stan that requests for IPHC data should be redirected to the IPHC.

Thanks all. The requester has been alerted that, for the reasons above, there are no plans to incorporate it into our databases and to contact IPHC for halibut age data. I am closing this request.
