Hi Dayv,
This request, and other haul-level data queries, can be fulfilled using our public-facing data portal on the Fisheries One-Stop Shop here: https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/foss/f?p=215:28
A query of the FOSS database for Sunflower Sea Star records for all AFSC surveys for all years yields the attached data (provided here in .csv and .xlsx formats). There are indeed a few records of this species from the eastern Bering Sea. Please let us know if you have questions or need additional information.

Hi Duane,
Sorry if this request seems like (is?) a duplicate of work you did 18 months ago as part of the SRT, but after I spoke with Sean at WGC it seemed like there was "more to the story." At the very least, documentation of S3 in the Bering all the way back to the 90s changes our maps and warrants a discussion of how to characterize the very low densities observed up there with regard to overall status of the species.
Do you have a bit of time to chat about these data sometime in the next week or so? I want to ensure we're including everything we can in the status review report as we update it for the final listing decision.
Taking a quick look, seeing no more than 7 stars in any year in the AI survey justifies not including this time series in our analysis. The EBS survey series has more observations, however, and seems to show an increase since 2021. The GOA survey series covers an area where we're data poor, and demonstrates a pretty steep decline in recent years (see attached file). I'm not sure why this didn't make it into the MARSS analysis. I'm CCing Nick here in hopes he can either tell us outright why the series didn't make the cut, or join us when we meet to discuss.
Let me know when a good time is to chat.
Thanks, Dayv

Apologies for not following data request protocol earlier. I have added the previously mentioned data files to the Google drive here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1LAh7vjCOcuijuzgNSDbC3oEGG1nbLcHP?usp=drive_link, for future reference.

I don't know why the GOA data didn't make it into the analysis. I'm not sure that I ever received them. I feel like we talked about them at some point, and decided to not include them but I don't remember why.
I could potentially talk tomorrow morning, but then I am on leave (back the 17th) then on leave again 20-26 Aug.

Hi Dayv,
I'm swamped with data editing the remainder of this week. Let's chat when you get back mid-August.

I'm on the CPS cruise aboard the LASKER from the 19th through the 31st. Looks like maybe the 18th is the only day we're all available this month? I'll send an invite.
Cheers, Dayv

Dayv, did you find these data in the public-facing data tables? I'm looking through our data requests and trying to clean a few of them up.
Thanks for checking in. Yes, I did. I also worked a bit with Duane to ensure I was really getting everything i thought I was getting.
Hope you're well, Dayv

Sweet! Thanks for letting me know!
Data product requested (stratum CPUE, etc.): Raw encounter data, with GPS location, of Pycnopodia helianthoides in any and all survey efforts in Alaska you have access to. Annual effort data, by region, such that CPUE can be caclulated on a region-specific and Alaska-wide basis.
Species: Sunflower sea star Pycnopodia helianthoides
Region (GOA, AI, Bering Sea): GOA, AI, Bering Sea
Research team making the request (PI /requester name, and tag team members with GitHub accounts, or email address if requestor does not have a GitHub account. Division is nice too.): Dayv Lowry, West Coast Region, Protected Resources Division. GitHub: DrDayv13 E-mail: david.lowry@noaa.gov
We recently proposed the sunflower sea star for ESA listing throughout it's range. At the WGC in Juneau in April, Sean Rooney noted that you have records for the species in the Bering -- which is outside it's currently documented range. In order to adequately consider the best available science for the final listing decision we need to be able to show where the species has been encountered throughut Alaska, as well as describe the region-specific relative abundance. Thanks much!!
