Model Overhaul! #52

Open aidancbrady opened 8 years ago

aidancbrady commented 8 years ago

Due to the (arguable) inconsistency of current missile model designs, DefenseTech is in dire need of a missile model overhaul, as well as new models for all tiers of the launcher screen, support frame, and base.

@PrototypeTheta made some awesome models and textures for Tier 1, but as I haven't heard from him in many weeks now, this issue still stands for Tier 1 as well.

If anyone is interested in helping out, let me know here- I'll also be asking around. Note that this issue is the last thing I hope to close before moving onto MC 1.10, so the sooner, the better!

How soon do you want such models? I'd do them, except that I wouldn't be able to work on them for the next 10-12 days, so that may be an issue...

aidancbrady commented 8 years ago

Not an issue! Can I see some of your other work?

QuantumTraverse commented 8 years ago

I am sorry, but I just got out of town as of a couple of hours ago, so any and all of my work is at home. This would be my first large/public project. I have worked only on private/with a few friends texture packs and texture edits to make things look cooler/more scientifically accurate. e.g. making a nuclear reactor glow blue rather than green due to cherenkov radiation. If you would only wait so long if you had an example of my work, I am sorry, go on without me.

If you still need help with that, I can help. I'm assuming you want them modeled in blender or something right? http://imgur.com/RjSexzp I made those models/textures for a mod that has been going on/off development for a good while.

Well I am still alive and working on this, just had to go dark for a while due to exams and stuff.

However, if people are still interested in helping, the models are being done through a relatively unknown form of modelling, I've been using TurboModelThingy and SMP Toolbox 2.0 to create the models in order to try and keep some kind of uniformity between the models whilst retaining the ability to work with more complex shapes, as well as making it easy to keep the textures on the same resolution as the rest of the world.

If anyone is interested do get in contact with me, I am more than happy to coach you through the process and get you familiar with the modelling style. It is unlikely that missile models will exceed 200 parts so if you are thinking of helping you don't need to purchase Toolbox 2.0, the free edition is more than enough.

I'm working as a Minecraft 3D modeler right now, and I have never heard of TurboModelTHingy or SMP Toolbox. Might I ask what they are, and where I could get them?

http://www.minecraft-smp.de/index.php/toolbox-2-0

SMP Toolbox 2.0, made by Manus, the undisputable god of Minecraft modelling.

Right now it's pretty much just set up for Flan's mod as that's currently the only mainstream mod using TMT. However I've had no trouble using it for DefenceTech and for my own mod projects.

It's similar to Techne/Tabula only it's not restricted to strict boxes, perhaps the most important is the "shapebox", which is like your regular box mesh only you can apply a transformation to each vertex. It's not quite as "plug-and-play" as blender models, but I find it's worth it for the more consistent style.

Fascinating.... I must investigate this further. Thank you very much good sir. :D
