"Replace emoji shortcode w/ emoji character" option doesn't work

Regardless of whether the option is enabled or disabled, it shows the emojis in the edit mode next to emoji shortcode anyway...

I had the same issue, however only because I had "source mode" still activated by accident (instead of the new live edit mode)

I had the same sort of problem: the behavior seemed to not follow the plug-in settings. The "require space" didn't work, the "replace w/ emoji" always happened regardless of the setting. Worse, pasting in a link with characters that trigger the plug-in breaks the link.
