Invariable backlight at logon in Oneiric / Unity #13

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Upgrade (?Install?) to Oneiric / Unity
2.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The real-world trouble is that, at boot, the display of the (new) logon screen
in oneiric, the backlight is set to 'dim' and cannot be modified. At any higher
daylight level, the logon screen is barely visible to invisible. Sometimes it
is just impossible to log in. The samsung-backlight adjustment only kicks in
*after* the login.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
samsung-backlight 0.13.7~ppa3~loms~oneiric

Please provide any additional information below.
An ugly workaround - that I don't know how to achieve - would be if one could
set the backlight to a 'high' level at boot; so that one can at least log in.

I can add a module parameter to set initial brightness
BTW, sorry for not responding so long

Is this a question, suggestion?
If so, I'd say: "Yes, with great pleasure"
I don't know if it needs to be adjustable. If a user sets it to a
reasonable low level inside, (s)he might be unable to see anything in
the bright sunlight. (surprise-surprise)
One could ponder to pre-set it to something like 60-70% which would
result in an always visible brightness, under any circumstances, for
the logon screen.

added parameter initbright=value, where value is initial brightness level (5-6
would fit), please, test and report any issues

please, note that oneiric introduces out-of-box samsung_laptop module that
implements the same functionality (e.g. brightness, wifi, fan control)

Okay, removed all others and installed samsung-laptop (with a dash,
not an underscore).
Everything seems okay; how to try the version with an initial
backlight next?? (The samsung-laptop does not seem to have it - where
are the settings?)

Well, you have two options:
- use out-of-box samsung-laptop module and set initial brightness from init
script (for example, rc.local)
- blacklist samsung-laptop module and install samsung_backlight from the
supplied .deb on downloads page (see readme). I've added initbright module
parameter, which you can specify in kernel boot command line. I think, the
value initbright=5 would fit.
