Incorporate the selection function into the construction of PDFs #15

Currently, the derivation in the paper does not include the selection function. Rather than following Kelly, et al. 2008, I propose following @ixkael's blog post to formulate the selection effect.

This is being addressed in #23. I'm going to make a branch for implementing it in code and writing it into the paper, though, so @ixkael can look it over more easily.

I'm reviving this in a new branch. The immediate goal is to write up in text/equations in the notebook how we plan to introduce selection functions, with the intention of not closing the issue until they are actually implemented in code, though that may be as toy/placeholder cases.
