This could use a thorough code review; I'm fairly sure it's all good, but there are some parts that I wasn't super confident about.

Can you elaborate on which parts you aren't confident about? I've never used VPC -- only skimmed the docs.

The implementation is sound, I'm just not sure if there's a better way or if I've missed something. In general I'm using this patch as is in production now without incident.
