A variant of this that would encourage fairer gameplay is if instead of decaying the reserve boxes, your applied ups decayed instead. So the moment you apply an up you're already losing it
Another potentially awesome variant would be instead of the ups just being lost, they're dropped.
Imagine pro gamer engaged in dogfight with noob, drops box is randomly dropped
1) noob has chance to grab box
2) box greed strikes and pro gamer tries to recover box, noob gets a lucky kill
Yet Another(tm) variant -- boxes sprinkle when you get shot, over a certain number. Imagine something like:
fully upgraded pro gamer hoards 20 boxes, n00b gets an accidental strike
pro gamer drops 20% ? of his boxes on first shot, panics, flies back
n00b gets another shot, gets lucky again, pro gamer still has 16 boxes, drops another 20% ?, while dying
n00b ends up with up to 7 of pro gamer's boxes, pro gamer respawns with 13 ups, which might just be enough to get fully upped again, but one more death and he'll have to grind for 10 minutes all over again
I'm wondering in this scheme how n00bs would be disadvantaged
Another problem -- prowlers get waaay more powerful. But if there was a limit on prowling time (#6) this might not be a problem
Another lame idea floating around for the 'promoting actual gaming' department...
Imagine some kind of soft upgrade cap, say, max 10 spare ups, after which, you can still pick them up, but they decay at some fixed rate. If you manage to collect double that number before the they decay, the extra ups are converted into a points bonus
The idea is to get the people who hoard ups and run to instead fight their ass off if they want the big bonus.
Maybe lame, but worth recording
(edit: obvious flaw in this scheme: if noobs drop boxes with only 30 pts, pro gamers are incentivized to hunt down noobs for their boxes, to get that bonus, so maybe this plan is really horribly shit :)
