This sounds like it might be better to tackle by offering more options for the user to manage their storage, rather than offloading it elsewhere. For example, Messages on iOS can automatically delete messages that exceed a certain time frame.
The same feature can also be found on Pulse SMS on Android
Attachments are always available to be downloaded at any time from your server, and you can also save attachments to your phone's local storage by long-pressing on them in a conversation. You can also delete all currently downloaded attachments from the app in the app's settings menu.
I see this kind of system as a good fit for people who want to have control over their attachment files while keeping their storage usage down. Would this be a solution you would agree with, or is there a different reason that you like keeping all of your attachments saved directly within the conversation?
this sounds like a better solution
This feature request is inspired by u/amthar's reddit post Attachments can take up gigabytes on people's devices and it would be nice if you could store attachments on the SD Card. Many people, including myself, like to keep attachments downloaded for various reasons (or don't know you can delete them) and it would be nice to be able to offload them to your SD Card.
