FEATURE: background customisation #1

It should be easy for users to customise their background colour. This should be possible from:

  1. the command line,
  2. a config file.

This can now be done from a config file, as a side-effect of dealing with issue #6 . Closing for now, as CLI users will probably be ok with this. Adding a note to issue #4 that the GUI should have a way of setting background colour directly.
