from that draft:

fine to be interested in things for their own sake, but shouldn't interfere with problem-solving/communication

supervised learning can do some cool things, but by itself it's esoteric

Machine learning is sometimes used to differentiate data science from analytics, but are esoteric. Undue focus on modeling can lead to weak prioritization and bad communication.

like a motor:

  • esoteric interest/importance
  • fascination/focus (classes, jobs)
  • people care about the application though
