  1. This unit was created in 1958 (see picture) to express the span of the Harvard Bridge connecting Boston to Cambridge, Massachusetts, with an ultimate value of 364.4 (plus or minus one ear). The freshman student whose body length was used to standardize the unit later became chairman of the American National Standards Institute, and his cousin with the same last name won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the Cosmic Background Explorer satellite.

Measurement activity by paces: teach about what paces are, how to use them, have different people measure something (a building? a block?) in paces, maybe compare to some reference thing (a building? a car?) and see how the variation goes?
