Bugfix milkmaid initialization #14

Commit 38af9d3b560c0d1b6b2c0c62d8c609786035a4be breaks milkmaid initialization.

This pull requests fixes this bug (commit 65264348232575b1916230640505656d959b698d) and performs additional cleanups to make it easier to find similar bugs in the future.

found an additional issue with identifying milk maids, not sure where it's coming from -> closing this PR until reason has been found
