Isn't it an option to use the label translations for that?
This is specifically about the symbol.
It's possible that different locales use different symbols for the same measurement. As an example, I highlighted French, which replaces the B with o in all binary sizes. (ko, mo, go, to,...).
I understand. My idea was to use the translations for that purpose. So, you could save ko, mo, go, to etc. as the french translation.
But of course, this does only work if you are not using the translation for another purpose.

Currently symbol on measurement units is global across all locales, however, in reality this is not the case.
For example the symbol for Gigabyte in English is "GB", while in French the symbol is "Go" (Gigaoctets).
