To solve the "Failed to locate protobuf", it took me 5-10 minutes of browsing the README and issues.

Hopefully, this will help others :)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not merging this.

The instruction is not for Apple Silicon but for macOS with Homebrew (It applies also for macOS on Intel but it does not apply for other OSes on Apple Silicon.)
There are lots of possible system configurations (operating systems, package manager, etc) and I'm not going to maintain instructions for them. It is the responsibility of the user to review the prerequisites and figure out how to install them on the system.

This PR helped me on my Mac (Intel) Can you simply mention, that a $: brew install pkg-config protobuf is needed to enable the installation of the gem?
