The pain you feel when you type macro prefix is just a symptom. The disease is the fact that macros and keybinds are two different things.
I have a few thoughts on how these things could be improved, but I'm yet to write it up as an issue. I'll try to do it this weekend and link it here.

tmux has a prefix key by default but I only use a few keybindings. That's why I disabled all the default keybindings and the prefix key. Life is much better now.
