We could switch our internal backend to use e.g. PostgeSQL.

Advantages:

maximum datase size would not be limited by available RAM as much as it is the case now.
multiple renderers could use the same backend
probably a performance increase

Disadvantages:

if we require the external database, alaCarte would be harder to set up than before.
