Working design summary

The Pandemic Symptom Tracker Calendar (PSTC) project has been set up to develop open code for retrospective and real-time pandemic symptom tracker apps.
The main aims are: • To generate and test calendars, and simple gamification features, to drive/ increase symptom data upload (see initial test design below). • To support longitudinal epidemiological studies by developing code that facilitates retrospective as well as real-time symptom data collection. • To widen discussion on privacy issues relating to the collection of personal details, and spatial data, using pandemic tracker apps. • To bring together experts working in epidemiology/health, graphic design, citizen science/crowdsourcing, gamification, data science and data ethics interested in open symptom tracker code.

Collective learning angle:

goal must be to document the things that would otherwise be lost: perceptions at particular points in time, ephemera, information that later will turn embarrassing or contradict the official story. just tried it out- another good one to think how calendar could link in at end of survey- the most explicit i've seen about need to daily feedback. But asks for email, asks post code ( i put in first 3 digits and still worked though but didn't tell you could just give this rather than all) also asked for height, weight so a lot of personal info imagine some a lot wouldn't want to give. V easy to use

Dear all, Jack Kreindler here from cos-clear.com/about working with Adrian Weller / Lord James O'Shaughnessy et al. I believe we need to rally around creation of an open-standard cob-clear.com/open-standard. I have spoken to NHSx, and all the leads of the new survey and apps that have emerged. There is an element of each wanting to be the answer. Data privacy, sharing and interoperability will be lost if we don't work around standards. Very best JK

@PhantomMedic Yes totally agree many of symptom tracking apps ask for a mass of personal data - post code, weight, height, email address etc, - as well as data privacy issues also puts off many potential uploaders. Feedback from our colleague in China on this soon to be uploaded - also real concern around spatial tracking apps at micoolevel. Good to get ODI involved as so strong on data ethics. Our work on this site simply focuses on trying to a) collate open code being produced internationally on symptom tracking for others to look at/use and b) to create a highly visual calendar that encourages people to keep on adding data everyday or retrospectively for min 12 week period- with code able to be integrated into other apps.

@louisjobst Hi Louis I have copied the draft design brief and pasted it below. Would it be possible for you to translate this into really simply draft visuals in a PDF for those wishing to help with coding using your existing font and colour scheme? Just need to show how layout could work.

Thanks v much for this @louisjobst starting to look great COVID App Draft 1.pdf. I will work on today. I think the second page needs not fill whole page so we have have a dedicated space room for explanatory /notes on how the design works on each page which i now realise we need. (The aim is to layout a stand alone app design but one from which people can fork bits of open code that are useful e.g colouring calendar, simple gamification features, hex numbers etc.

Also realise following chat with @entopia that what we need to try to do is to get people to add a mass of data on their first visit** a) because they may not come back b) because we we need to make most of each visit/knowledge. c) because the more colour they add on first go/and more of the calendar they have filled, the more they likely they are to keep on going every day adding data to symptom apps d) because u could v quickly amass a ton of retrospective data.

If the calendar was automatically set to the date of a country's first pandemic case then when u arrived would have the knowledge to colour all boxes between this date and the current data. This means that you could quickly add for example that no one had had symptoms in your household for first 14 days of data, or that v minor symptoms spread through a households during this period and then symptoms stopped. People would be properly engaged at once in the creative process - colouring-in multiple boxes - and also a lot of data would be captured even if they didn't come back again. The colour pattern would also be advanced more quickly which would then encourage longer term buy-in/ incentivise daily upload. Had sudden though also that maybe there should letters from the THANK YOU spelt out - with letters beginning to reveal themselves within the colour boxes- definitely lots that could be done with gamification once the basic structure is up.

@louisjobst - so for page 3 then we need calendar revised back to jan and forward to June.- months needs to be clearly visible maybe font a bit stroner. 7 x 12 colours can just repeat. Somehow we need to show won PDF what looks like if choose no symptoms til now i..e all colours instantly automatically will fill in (maybe in a streamline by line to make more interesting and indicate to continue data flow by keeping adding).

Also attach LSHTM FluSurvey questionnaire https://flusurvey.net/en/ for sample questions. Just need to associate coloured circle to each of these symptoms but would alsonadd a) excessively dry throat and b) mild cough as extras - So need to show how can select date and click on plus button to add symptom - with plus button and text instruction. Then box with colour.

Also think we need to show how u can choose an option to ' Colour calendar by symptoms' and then colour no symptoms a pale colour and symptoms a bit stronger? Back button needs to be v clear.

Focus now on both retrospective and realtime collection and gamification and on code that can also be used as add-on to existing apps . Revised draft design brief up at top of thread for discussion. Imagining gamification could involve i) instant colouring as data added as Coloring London ii) ( with colour running animated line by line when filling in large amounts of retrospective non-symptom data iii) colour burst when u add entry iv) thank u! pop up when u add entry v) notification issues but main thing is lets u add stuff anytime vi) designed for 70+ / v few personal detail asked for as CL - only those essential for research- COVID App Draft 7.pdf

Hi @tomalrussell or anyone else who might be able? Just spoke to @entopia. Would it be possible to breakdown tasks coming out of COVID App Draft 7.pdf above so that those interested might be able to pick up specific bits? Know everyone has a lot on so bite size ideal and then we can at least we can start making small steps. Would be good to try and get at least something out for countries to fork open code where nothing else exists. Forgot to add on PDF we also need to include a translate button.
