Summary

This is a suggested timeline described for each month. These tasks will be collaboratively delivered by the core members and open source contributors.

• Project kick's off in September/October 2021
• Provide project scope, stakeholder contacts and a clear set of expectations and goals
  • Malvika and Roly to make sure that this is in place
• Month 1:
  • Landscape analysis (existing materials) - curriculum design
  • Reproducibility and Open Science Introduction
  • Set up and understand The Carpentries curriculum design
• Month 2:
  • Basic data wrangling and visualisation module
  • Adapt on the biological datasets
• Month 3:
  • Start working on statistical aspects of data analysis
  • Finish the wrangling and visualisation
• Month 4:
  • Computational environment: Docker, Binder, Conda
  • Workflow management
• Month 5:
  • Engage with potential users and identify gaps in the material
  • Invite review from direct users and wider open source community
• Month 6:
  • Finalise the materials by asking for final feedback from all stakeholders
  • Release on Zenodo and The Carpentries - invite trainers

Timeline revised for the remaining months:

• Turing Team: Develop the format, questions and materials required for the 1:1 meeting with the Crick PIs (UX plan) before 15 January 2022.

  • Integrate suggestions described in this document across two masterclasses (Please note that the masterclass now listed as the second masterclass is currently being developed which will be shared on GitHub).
  • Focus group/interview format first draft with Alisha, Kirstie and RAMs.

• Crick and Turing Teams: To arrange 1:1 or focus group with the Crick PIs (potential target audience) between 15 January 2022 - 22 February 2022 to explore challenges, concerns and understanding of best practices in data science from their fields, which can be integrated into the training courses. (James F. to coordinate from the Crick team)

  • Crick Team: Provide more details on the suggested specialist topics/areas from PI’s preferably by 20 January 2022. This will be crucial in deciding the location for these topics between the two proposed masterclasses. Please let the Turing Team know if more time might be required.
  • Turing Team: To continue developing and refining two masterclasses in line with the details above, apply examples from the Turing and Crick (look for these examples in the UX process). To ensure iterative and collaborative development, as well as sustainability of two masterclasses, the materials will be shared via a GitHub repository using The Carpentries training format (under CC-BY 4.0 license):

• Turing Team: Create skeleton for masterclasses and move to The Carpentries format

  • Lydia and Malvika, Project management (MC 2): 14 January 2022, pass it to Fede, Alisha and Kirstie.
  • Lydia and Fede, ML intro (MC 1): 17 January 2022, pass it to Malvika, Alisha and Kirstie.

• Crick and Turing Teams: Turing Team to share the first draft of the project management masterclass (MC 2) by 10 February for comments, suggestions and co-development on GitHub with the Crick Team by 25 February 2022.

• Crick and Turing Teams: Turing Team to share the draft of the ML intro masterclass (MC 1) by 10 March for comments, suggestions and co-development on GitHub with the Crick Team by 25 March 2022.

Project finishes and launches on 31 March 2022.
