merged Helen's + Jon's code #23

@helendduncan, here's the result of the merged code, I added a few comments to explain the changes I made (which weren't many) ^^

I'll leave the PR open for a while but if you don't have time to look through before tomorrow's meeting, I'll just merge it into main first so that we can demo it. I'm super excited about this!
