I think this looks good. This problem has come up in discussion at least a couple of times, and there's just no good answer. Something randomized, but session based, would work really well, but we cannot do that with a static website. At least this adjustment adds some variety and calls for a bit more examination of what you're looking at.
@tuckerk3 what are your thoughts?
@kenirwin @dwgreen1 Agreed. I like the contrast this adds; it helps visually distinguish the posters. I think this will be an improvement. Thanks!
So, it's a little late in the game, but: I have a minor proposed modification on the posters page.
Last year, we found that posters at the beginning of the page (and, to lesser extent, the end of the page) we seeing more traffic than those in the middle. I attributed this to the "first few google results" syndrome, modified by a librarianly attempt to get past that by skipping to the bottom to prove that we don't just use the first few results.
Contemplating this again today, my colleague @yarnetsky suggested changing up some colors on the page to keep the whole thing from looking so samey-samey.
Our proposed solution is to give the poster cards a slight checkerboard background -- a pale green on the odd numbered cards -- to create a little visual distinctiveness. Do you think this helps at all?
I'm particularly tagging @tuckerk3 and @dwgreen1 as I think they were most closely involved in rethinking the poster layouts this year.
