make wrapper goes into an infinite loop

If $MAKE is not set and gmake is not there, M=make which is, again, the 'make' wrapper not the real make.

Actually, this would not be an issue if I didn't have . in my $PATH. However, just in case I'm not alone, it would be nice if it was fixed.
