Perhaps you could also please check that OpenPDF is using juniversalchardet correctly here? https://github.com/LibrePDF/OpenPDF/blob/master/openpdf/src/main/java/com/lowagie/text/xml/simpleparser/SimpleXMLParser.java#L564

Thanks for the PR!

juniversalchardet had no exposed API for detecting encoding from BOM.

I've released a new version with this API, I'll make a PR to OpenPDF shortly
