I've talked to Phill a bit about this and here's the plan:

Count the number of stopped protons in the thick silicon detectors changing:

position of target by 1 cm in each direction
rotation of target by about 5 degrees

Phill also mentioned that it might be worth starting from having stationary muons inside the target rather than upstream, so I'll try that.
