Difficult to start the program on Windows #50

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.the extraction of pynguin.12 fron python3.2.2 idle asks for code in its 
window.i tried a few including GPLv3.it does not work. what to do?

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

expected output is the pynguin editor itself as shown in the videos.

pynguin0.12 over python3.2.2 idle(pynguin unextracted zip);mine is windowsxp 
pro version 3

the results definitely gives a GUI window that asks for a code which i am not 
able to give;which i think is that i am half way through and got stuck.

i failed to mention that i have also PyQtGPLv4.8.5 forPython 3.2(x86) installed 
on my computer

Pynguin is developed with Python 2 only.

Please try again with the latest 2-series Python.

I am going to change the title of this issue to "Does not support Python 3" 
since I think that describes the problem better and I would like to support 
Python 3 when I can.

If you try again with Python 2 and are still having trouble, please report. I 
will switch it back and open a new issue for Python 3 support.

the first point in pynguin not supporting python 3 series is that all
programs that are writen for pynguin do not have the first fundamental
requirement of :
"print"    must be followed by paranthesis,within which the entire
statement must be enclosed.
There may be some similar trivial issues which are typical for Python 3.
Now i tried python 2 sries2.6.2,2.5.1 and also iron python 2.7.1,which
i specifically downloaded for this purpose only.
All i get is PK00;the zeroes i have depicted because i actually got
two square shaped zeroes which i cannot type in keyboard; this is by
trying to open the the zip file of pynguin0.12 with python idle.
Earlier when i tried each .py files within the zip (after extracting
of course);some of them did give results;like one gave a black DOS
window,another gave an idle like window;but if all these get togather
in one group it may constitute the pynguin as given in the video.
why don't your dept come out with a video of how to create the pynguin
from the necessary downloads.All other softwares (like
eclipse,netbeans,etc,etc ) do publish videos of how to install.They
will bw complicated,but still people can pause the video at
appropriate intervals and duplicate the directions exactly to get
results.

I'm sorry you are having trouble.

You may want to get someone who has more computer experience help you get 
everything installed. It can be complicated and frustrating sometimes.

You cannot open a .zip file with Python. Python only opens .py files.

You need to extract the .zip file using a program that can extract .zip 
archives.

You do not mention which operating system you are using, but assuming it is 
windows xp, vista, or 7, you should be able to just double-click on the 
pynguin-0.12.zip file in windows explorer to extract the files from the archive.

That should leave you with a folder called pynguin-0.12

Now, you need to have a 2-series Python installed. (That does not include Iron 
Python 2.7.1 which is a completely different thing altogether.) I recommend 
Python-2.7.2 which is the first link under "Download Python" on the Python 
website:
http://python.org/ftp/python/2.7.2/python-2.7.2.msi

(Again, that assumes some form of windows operating system)

You will also need a recent PyQt. Probably this one:
http://www.riverbankcomputing.co.uk/static/Downloads/PyQt4/PyQt-Py2.7-x86-gpl-4.

I'm sorry there is no video showing you how to do this, but there is no "dept." 
It's just me and I don't have a computer that runs windows on which to make a 
video about how to install pynguin.

I am going to add these instructions to a wiki page. If you get it working and 
have anything to add about installing on windows, please make comments there to

i also know that zip files cannot direcrtly be handled by python
idle.my very first approach was to extract the pyn0.12.then i tried
all py files one by one.two of them gave the editor and idle like
results on small frames.all the rest of the files showed error
messages like syntax, and of course paranthesis error for print
statements inside py.files.Then you only wrote to directly use the zip
file.anyway,i shalll try again and again till i succeed.

definitely it gives me more thrill and excitement to interact with you
and others,more than if i would have succeded in getting the pynguin.
my operating system is windows xp;pro edition 3;i bought this software
and didnot download (illegally).
i have already PyQtGPLv4.8.5 for both 3.2.2 and 2.5.1python
versions;do you still need the one mentioned above by you o.e
4.8.6.1.exe i shall try that also

dear friend,
i now have python2.7.2 and PyQt4.8.6.1 as you mentioned.I repeated the
same exercise of extracting the pynguin0.12 zip and tried all py files
by python 2.7.2 idle.All results are similar to previous(i.e editor.py
gives black DOS like small frame;highlightedtextedit,py gives white
frame equal in size to the main.py).Most of the other py files donot
give any results.But thereis one py file i.e----main.py-----which now
shows a blanc frame and tends to continue as though it extracts but no
results.But it shows an error message which i have enclosed.This must
be your clue to correct the main.py file to suit the windows xp.The
blanc frame is definitely bigger and may be the correct output
expected.

I spoke with several people using Windows XP and they report than Pynguin works 
just fine there.

You need to follow the directions more carefully.

To run the program, you need to run the script called "pynguin" (note, no 
extension) using Python.

It will look something like:

cd pynguin-0.12
python pynguin

It is also possible that by renaming that script to something like 
run_pynguin.py you may be able to launch it by double-clicking the file in 
explorer.

Now that you have several python versions installed, You will also need to take
care that you are using the correct python to run the program. It needs to be a
recent 2-series, and it needs to have PyQt4 installed.

I am going to re-rename this issue as "Difficult to start the program on 
Windows" since I think that better describes the issue you are having. I will 
open a separate issue for Python 3 support, since I do want to get to that 
eventually.
