I won't merge this for several reasons:

why remove six and roll an own module? In the future we might need more of six' functionality, and end up reimplementing even more of it.
the rebase conflict fix commit is ugly; since you rebase anyway, please make sure your commits are clean.
the PEP8 "violations" are mostly line length, as I can see. Alec will have to decide if he wants to apply the 80-char rule.

The build also fails due six import in runtest.py that I forgot to update in the commit
