A stopgap for Emacs/org-mode users might be org-media-note, though having an automated way to call said session upon opening a media element would expedite things. Supermemo's scripts maybe useful in this regard, or calling native Linux applications via winebrowser regedit settings, though I have had mixed success with the latter, most likely because of wine 5.2 - a requirement due to a font regression as you know.
