The bundled NHX flashing software can't actually flash to 'power replay' carts #20

Closed L10N37 closed 1 year ago

L10N37 commented 1 year ago

I used unirom instead. 1: I used ultraiso to open the boot disc containing NHX (which won't flash the cheap AM29F010 carts you find everywhere) and added a directory. In this directory i placed the Thax international ROM file - you need to rename it for old file name convention. 'thax121.rom' or similar does the trick. The default name is too long.

2: Use Unirom - launch this via a boot disc (i used a chipped console) or swap trick, or freepsxboot on a memory card.. etc. You can make your own flasher (i use memcarduino) or purchase one etc. etc. Use it's file browser to navigate to the tony hax ROM, select the ROM and it will allow you to flash it to your power replay cart.

cheatcart

L10N37 So no need to place the rom file anywhere, If your trying to flash to a cart you should be using the "tonyhax-rom-flasher" Burn> tonyhax-rom-flasher.cue / .bin @ slowest speed you can. Then boot that CD up like any other homebrew on your PS1. If unirom is now installed tonyhax international 1.2.1 will also install, I would at least try international you can always go back to unirom if you want> international is nice because it autoboots with lid closed, first time I did this I burnt the image made for Japanese consoles thinking it was the flasher but if your trying to do a power replay you want the rom file folder & the tonyhax-rom-flasher.cue .bin file in your CD-R burning software

hit start

L10N37 commented 1 year ago

I flashed the latest tonyhax international onto my cheap cheat cartridge and it works perfectly. I had to use unirom, and yes, version 8K as it's the latest. I basically booted up with a unirom cheat cart then flashed it with tonyhax international. I probably should have switched cheat carts so I wouldn't have to make a new unirom one :P

the point is, NXflash could not write to my cheat cart, I burnt the tonyhax rom flasher disc. you mean to say, the ROM for tonyhax international is not actually included as part of the flashers BIN file that is burnt to the disc? that's pretty silly. (also, I doubt this is the case, I think it's NHX not being compatible with that flash chip as it says 'untested') Either way, it's all sorted. Unirom doesn't have an issue flashing ROMs to that flash chip.

also, to expand

-as mentioned I made a unirom cheat cart loader with unirom boot cd

JMaxxL commented 1 year ago

https://github.com/L10N37 OOO lol I see you use unirom for your homebrew bootup yes 8.0K is the lasted, you used that to boot up tonyhax international, I wanted you to flash the newest tonyhax international. It kinda seemed like you were having issues burning a CD to flash your cart try maybe try imgburn instead ultra, its compact> (https://download.imgburn.com/SetupImgBurn_2.5.8.0.exe) I use it over my paid $90.00 alcohol 120% now I see your trying flash NHX like you used to have to in the past at first, but don't use unirom to the older flash tonyhax international unless your wipeing the cart if it has issues. I just wanted you to do that incase in was corrupted but its flashing fine, "tonyhax-rom-flasher" defiantly has the new 1.2.1 rom file you were looking already built in. No set up needed & its the newest version on that image in the ROM folder. The fact the 'power replay' are flashable is great. Now I can buy them for friends, instead of GS/AR that are 3x CO$T ! nice. I didn't want to buy one myself at first thanks

L10N37 commented 1 year ago

I think you are misunderstanding I added the latest tonyhax international rom to a disc and flashed it manually with unirom The flashing disc bin/cue with nhx did not work nor did burning it copy a stand alone accessible version of the tonyhax rom file.

JMaxxL commented 1 year ago

ok fine but how dose adding the rom file to NHX do anything there is absolutely no reason to do that what so ever https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37b_EcYNSr8&ab_channel=JayTime the flasher already has the correct rom useing NHX and adding rom into the bin cue would accomplish nothing since it would be same rom right? if not your making mistake somehow because your just rebuilding what alex alrady made

L10N37 commented 1 year ago

dude, that does NOT WORK with my cheap power reply cartridges. This is the entire point of me placing an issue but then after no reply figuring out a work around.

What i accomplished, was flashing the ROM onto the cheat cart using unirom instead of NHX. NHX DOES NOT WORK. I simply used the flashing disc as a working playstation disc to add the rom to.

If you browse that disc with unirom file manager you will not see the ROM file there to click X on in unirom browser and flash.

I could have modified any working ps1 bin/cue that unirom had no issues reading and added the ROM to that instead.

JMaxxL commented 1 year ago

dame so I have 4 carts i never seen one act this way were it would only flash one thing on it UNLESS it had built in memory card or something

JMaxxL commented 1 year ago

My point is you had unirom on it at first so the tonyhax flasher should be working like normal.... normally the carts will either flash EVERYTHING perfectly or nothing that is so bizarre and hard for me to accept

L10N37 commented 1 year ago

They don't work, i bulk purchased a stack of them and tried a few. You have ATMEL 29C010A flash, mine have the AM29F010, it's common stuff. I have seen them used in old OG Xbox modchips to hold the BIOS for example.

That will be the issue, i was asking him to add support for that flash. Because NHX didn't work, i just used unirom to flash it as that IC is supported- case closed.

FYI I don't even use softmods myself, I have UberNee which is my own spin of PSNEE with quite a few changes after my original Uber Chip was finalised, i moved onto one that read SubQ data

L10N37 commented 1 year ago

Dude, i used Unirom to flash Unirom to the cheat cart , that is why i had unirom first. the console is chipped. I used unirom bootCD. it shouldn't be hard to accept when NHX literally says UNTESTED next the AM29F010 when it detects that as the flash inside the cheat cart.

It's simple - NHX needs an update for AM29F010 and states it's untested - I tested it, No go!

JMaxxL commented 1 year ago

O Nice did you see my tower of consoles, I actually have LAN of orginal xbox set up im going to pick up an HD-CRT for lightgun games next month really excited I wanted to get a chip on one of my orginal xboxes also an RGH3 for a 360 aswell they are extremely cheap right now

L10N37 commented 1 year ago

usually you don't want HD CRT because they can have the 100hz which stuffs the light guns up. I have a stack of CRT's, have owned about 8 PVM's but use consumer modded sets now - i mod them for other people from time to time :)

JMaxxL commented 1 year ago

same I only like CRTs for lightguns I really like monitors and OLEDs for even retro games aslong as im using good signal im happy with flat panels... I guess a new orginal xbox mod chip just came out like last week have you heard anything about it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYoVERl-7fU&ab_channel=Dubesinhower

L10N37 commented 1 year ago

no, i did see the M2 loader. I used to speak to the dev a little before he released any of his pico boot etc. Nice guy. Suggested i started on arduinos if i want to learn programming and so i did.

I personally don't understand the Gamecube hype though, you can softmod a wii without any additional cost and PAL ones do RGB (+ component). You can use SD card or up to 2tb external hard drive on a wii. No lag on FMV's etc. fully hardware compatible with gamecube.

JMaxxL commented 1 year ago

No not that specific video I just mean retro news in general the orginal Xbox has been getting alot love same as the PS1 they are actually adding wifi support to the serial connection to the PS1 digitals that have HDMI and the orginal xbox has xbox live replacement considering that the OG xbox just had a mod chip come out 6 months ago and a new one just came out last week im pretty shocked the rate they consoles are being advanced

L10N37 commented 1 year ago

yep, looking forward to some installations being sent in when the products are back out like PS1 digital. If you are on twitter @vajskid As this is for issues :)

JMaxxL commented 1 year ago

O BTW did you say something about using 240 test suite for something other than A/V ? I was confused

alex-free commented 1 year ago

NXFLASH is the software used to flash the cheat cart with the tonyhax international ROM file when using the rom flasher cd BIN+CUE. The flasher CD contains the NXFLASH executable plus a special romfile.dat archive file containing the Tonyhax International .rom file for fast & easy flashing.

While I did write an open source program to generate the .rom file, and the romfile.dat archive for NXFLASH, I did not write NXFLASH. NXFLASH is actually a closed source program that doesn't have source available.

NXFLASH is based on XFLASH, though, which is an ancient PSX program that does literally the same thing basically. The source was released for XFLASH, which means in theory I want to create an 'OpenXFLASH' program that can I.e. compile with the psnoobsdk and also support more flash carts. THERE ARE INDEED SOME FLASH CARTS THAT ARE NOT SUPPORTED IN NXFLASH/XFLASH.

So sadly this is a won't fix for now, until a new rom flasher program gets worked on.

Again, I use GameShark Pro v3.0 carts exclusively and they work great. Most other carts will also work, but some like the one in the issue do not yet.

The .rom file is meant for this exact use case though. If the flasher CD doesn't support your flash cart, use UniRom with the .rom file.

JMaxxL commented 1 year ago

yeah I guess If china is going to make cheaper ones it would be really cool if they could be used on the jap consoles that you are also expanding the capability of by adding support for tonyhax international at same time make since.

So you only use the GSpro hmmm, well My gameshark pro 3.2 was corrupted when I got it... I thought I fixd it after wiping & re-flashing, every exploit rom I've ever ran has worked without issues on it, But gameshark rom's and CAETLA34 cant save anything it seems to not like anything like v-mem, settings, codes changes of any kind if I mess with any of that the next boot will just start go to the stock sony bios, just like the cart is not plugged in. Then If i go back to THi it boots fine. Dose the 3.0 have save issues like the ones im experiencing with my 3.2? NX states its a "SST 28SF040" is this the same hardware 3.0 use's I highly doubt it from sound of things.

I found the #1 thing that has made me want to play, replay & try games I never would have is gameshark codes they have fixed outdated game mechanics & even bugs. I've been using GS Five / AR "made for PSX & PSone" CDs The only 2 I know of that allow you to save custom codes. Seems like some of the best codes were not around at time PS1 games were pressed, but its not the same as a cart CDs are a pain in comparison.

Anyway if you have any custom roms of any kind that were made for larger 512 carts id love to try them out, do you have a discord I still have not been able to find it?

If you ever decided to do a tonyhax international build with gameshark built in I would be so stocked I bet you know every dam thing there is to know about GS/AR making the ultimate 512k rom would also be something you have already thought about.

So china actually does make brand new cheat carts that work with International. I have seen many people sell them on eBay and other sites, especially in east Asia. While I do not sell them, the license for Tonyhax/Tonyhax International does state you can do whatever you want with it so I don't actually care and take it as a huge compliment to all the work that's gone into it.

As far as Japanese consoles, the same cart works. You can put the cart in the back of the SCPH-1000 Japanese launch unit from 1994, or the SCPH-7502 PAL unit from 1999, and it just works. It auto-detects the console region and changes accordingly.

Also, there is nothing to 'remove' from the Japanese consoles that doesn't also apply to the USA/PAL ones. I only mention this because in your videos and on Reddit I've seen you mention this. All consoles with a FPSXBOOT card must have that removed before booting a game with Tonyhax International. This applies to every boot method, the cheat cart, FPSXBOOT method, Boot CD, GameShark code, save game exploit.

Tonyhax the original has some iffy support for not having to remove the card, but again it causes issues with some games so I decided a while ago to just throw the baby out with the bath water and prompt users to always remove any and all FPSXBOOT memory cards before booting a game with international. Even slot 2 memory cards as they still have issues causing hangs like even in the original Tonyhax for Tekken 3. The FPSXBOOT exploit is cool but it causes soo many problems after you do it and go to launch a game of you leave the card in.

I have had issues with my GameShark v3.0 carts before. For some reason when I flashed back the GameShark v3.0-v3.2 original Roms to the cart, it wouldn't boot any games. I had to use UNIROM to flash it in a non-auto detected way and then it worked to boot games. I'm would think codes could be saved to the cart after that but I never tested it. Here is my thread where I figured this out:

http://www.psxdev.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=4030

Let me know if this fixes that. I can try to save some codes on a cart that I flash back to the GS firmware like I did in the thread.

I use the GameShark Lite CD as well. I have a real copy but it is widely available online as well. If you boot the GameShark Lite CD backup CD-R from Tonyhax International using a USA/PAL console, you can then boot a backup CD-R from the GameShark Lite. The GameShark Lite also allows you to save codes to a normal memory card. The GSHAX Tool is capable of generating save files for the GameShark Lite that contain GSHAX codes already entered (which is very handy because GSHAX codes are like 92 lines long). With some tweaking of that code I could even make a different program that could pre-enter custom codes to a save game for the GameShark Lite since me and Mottzilla reversed the save game file format.

Mottzilla actually knows a lot more then me about how to do ROM images. He helped a lot in making the ROM a reality, he wrote the assembly code that switches the console from the BIOS into the flashed cart with the Tonyhax International PS-EXE. I could ask him about this.

The thing is, it might just be better to add support for custom codes in Tonyhax International. The way the Anti-Piracy bypass system works in International is through cheat codes actually. A lot of those cheat codes I generated myself with my aprip tool to bypass anti-piracy in games that did not have such codes back in the day. But they really are just essentially cheat codes. The way I could add support for custom cheat codes would probably be something like:

1) a desktop tool allows you to enter in cheat codes and takes those codes, writes a special save game file that Tonyhax International reads from a memory card at boot.

2) Tonyhax International applies those cheat codes before booting the game.

It shouldn't be that much to implement. The memory card reading functionality I've already messed with once. And the tool is easy, just need to make a simple format to contain the codes I guess.

This has actually been a feature I've been meaning to add since like last year.

JMaxxL commented 1 year ago

"a desktop tool allows you to enter in cheat codes and takes those codes, writes a special save game file that Tonyhax International reads from a memory card at boot." "Tonyhax International applies those cheat codes before booting the game"

WOW A MEMORY CARD this is exactly what I would want, I know some people might not use this function but I would LOVE THIS I'm vary excited no hardware basically WTH so cool this has made my nite I hope Im able to test it soon soooo dose the reader work with it dose PS2 work with this what do I need to write to memory card ??????

I wanted to make a video about Mottzilla 'stealth unlocker' tonite I scrolled threw 30 videos & didn't find anything on it, It was kinda the same with international but no english video. It basically just allows you past the "please insert a playstation disc" really great original hardware geeks like me will love that & it keeps everything else stock. It even Boot's LOD/LOM multi disc games that some exploits have issues with.

A Third cheat CD ! the 'Game Shark lite' nice, if I get a chance Ill add it to the video & I hope we find 4th & someone comment's on it. I'm worried about technical issue with the memory card pull out you mentioned Id like to put change in description or something & actually change it later.

Sorry I cant edit video feels like I'm on a PC from 1980 but as soon I can Ill either re-shoot or edit in a clip that explains... um is there anything else you wanted me to change ? I'm really sorry I didn't have tripod & capture device I'm staying with family my modern PC w/GPU is at my house ATM. But I can still write correction into the description, before I share it anywhere more besides reddit.

No worries... besides that I didn't see any discrepancies.

Like I said though, there should never be a FreePSXBOOT card in slot 1 or slot 2 of the console when you use Tonyhax International (any boot method). Once the Tonyhax International loader starts you have to remove any FPSXBOOT card, if you don't and your game hangs it's because you didn't follow the instructions.

I know those instructions suck but it is what it is. The official Tonyhax again has some support for just leaving the slot 2 FPSXBOOT memory card in the console but some games still hang, I.e. Tekken 3. Also I feel like most of the UniRom issues are because of leaving the FPSXBOOT memory card in the console when launching a game. They just don't know how the patch is not as universal as they think... it's really just not to be bothered with right now IMO which is why I have those instructions on the website.

My understanding is that the GameShark v4.0 and newer all allow save loading of codes from memory card. The GameShark Lite definitely does for sure though. The GameShark CDX V3.3 is weird though and requires some BS proprietary memory card adapter to save codes. Stay away from that.

Again though I only have a GameShark Lite specifically for this functionality of saving and loading codes off of a normal memory card (which you can pirate the image of) it is what I recommend for codes until I get support info Tonyhax International natively. No one else seems to care to do so, I'll just do it at one point I guess.

Fun fact, I was the sole tester of Stealth Unlocker. Mottzilla sent me the builds, I tested them since I have so many consoles. Stealth unlocker is great besides the limited AP bypass support. Real magic though, it patches the literal console bios and kernel...

Ngl your kinda inspiring me to make some videos. This stuff isn't that wide known because I just stick to old school forums and don't do discord or anything unfortunately... same with Mottzilla who is much older then I am. Like I said I have a great setup just haven't gone through with showing off the power of the soft modded PSX yet.

MottZilla is a huge inspiration to me though I'm really not doing him justice. We really are a team, he got us to this point in the scene for sure just because he thought my TOCPerfect thing was interesting!

JMaxxL commented 1 year ago

I never had done video before its funny It just irritated me there was no english international video.... Don't know if you saw the 6 other consoles they have been collecting dust because of all the PS1 games we have discovered I have been sharing @SeanSeanson & @ResonantArc. Trying to convince players to try jRPGs & Other games. Gameshark codes allow people to sit back drink beer while enjoying great music. GS/AR codes can fix fundamental game mechanics or bugs, grinding we all already did on our favorite games.

I did emulators for years 'attempting' to enjoy them even @ 4k but re-setup after changing devices has drove me crazy. ORGINAL HARDWARE allowed use to truly enjoy our time instead of set up over and over. Even "Memcard Manager" has failed me when I changed cellphones or HDMI devices.

Anyway if you know any programs to edit let me know. I'm suppose to go home for couple days would be nice to cut/add video.

wow so there is 10 softmod exploits I guess if you count swop & GShax. I think it was just 16 months ago or something modern vintage gamer did a video saying there was only one true exploit.... lol so that is normal that I need the door open for memory card manager in stealth unlocker? I hope so considering it is the only softmod that really allows stock bios im still extremely impressed & happy I can access it with cheat cart.

The GameShark CDX V3.3 is weird though and requires some BS proprietary memory card I have a proprietary action replay memory card since its all datel right will it work maybe, ive been trying to find the matching CD for it for months now.

Awesome vids again. I guess me and Mottzilla missed that bug with the lid closed. I let him know to see if it's possible to fix it.

I just implemented a feature into Tonyhax International that boots the stock BIOS. All you need to is start the rom with the cd drive lid open, and then when it says to insert a disc you press X on the controller to exit Tonyhax International and boot the Sony BIOS. From there you can access the memory card manager and CD player features. You can however not boot any games from the BIOS entered in this way, not even real ones that normally work with the cart not in the console. Still really cool though, this will be in the next update later today most likely.

N!C3 update

I Download save's on games with unlock's every chance I get. Sometimes I need to move the original save to my backup card. International would have to come out when I did this.

I've been testing 1.2.4 I tried 3 backups, 2 original discs. Everything seems great no more taking cart out if I want to access saves. Normal lid closed operation seems just as fast as [>1.2.3] I cant remember now but I always figured hitting reset was faster once your done with manager, maybe that is just habit of mine for some reason I remember 2 splash screens no matter what.

The only thing I noticed was UniROM did not start but the UniROM Boot CD is actually much better if you need tools or utilities anyway.

Do you know anywhere else to download saves ? https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps/562913-chrono-trigger/saves

I sadly do not know any other place to get saves.

Can you elaborate more about what you mean about UNIROM? If you mean trying to boot UNIROM through FPSXBOOT yea that's not going to work I would think. The way I am starting the BIOS shell program only gets the memory card manager and CD player functionality working. Booting games or FPSXBOOT exploits are not expected to work from the BIOS started that way at least for now.

No issues with the new update itself right? This has been something I’ve been wanting to implement just never got around to it until today.

There is also no lag introduced by this, since it is only reading for a controller button press while the lid is open.

JMaxxL commented 1 year ago

No lag I can tell, boots up just as quick as before My 2022 OLED went into sleep, THi is so fast before my TVs warm up could finish the PS1 had started a game without me even seeing any THi 1.2.4 code most times I don't make it past slash with any other softmod or stock BIOS & original disc

0 issues with any game or the memory card manager. The copy (all), move & delete features are functioning, When I change cards while in the manager [ALL save icons] disappears n' pops up with new card information just like is suppose to.

Was curious about UniROM2.1-FreePSXBoot-Slot2 & tonyhax1.4.5-FreePSXBoot-Slot2... Like I said if I need UniROM Tool's I can use UniROM Boot CD (The Disc is actually better in may ways) I was just testing it inside the BIOS after hitting X. International has largest compatibility & is fastest boot up plus now has memory card manager now, I've been messing around playing games ever since I saw your post & flashed thanks for the release.

Definitely look forward to that. You have seen this right :) https://alex-free.github.io/tonyhax-international/anti-piracy-bypass.html#apv2-bypasses

I'll probably look into the GameShark code support next.

No I have NOT see that list, that is really interesting thanks I only knew about the multi disc ones & crash... I made sure to put a note in the description on my stealth unlocker video were I said "steath unlocker is ONLY softmod to offer stock memcard manager" its no longer the only one to offer memcard manager - sorry for all edits I am not good at typing on my phone nerve issues I keep forgetting to hit update/save on stuff

Do you know if NXFlasher or maybe your new flasher will support CHD format, or only rom ?

alex-free commented 1 year ago

Do you know if NXFlasher or maybe your new flasher will support CHD format, or only rom ?

I am unfamiliar with CHD, is that what UNIROM uses to store multiple .ROMs?

I am honestly unsure what the capabilities will be currently, it is pretty far on the back burner at the moment. I have a homebrew I'm working on and also doing Tonyhax stuff, that is taking up like all my free time for programming it seems.

JMaxxL commented 1 year ago

Alex check this out I don't know if anyone else has used this or not, but I just happen to have a bic laying around. the sping effect from plastic worked perfect, I know it might be a little risky if you LEAVE it in your system because of the ink. But just to boot up flash Cheat Cart or make a FreePSXBoot with UniROM then remove after boot, it took 4 sec to pull top off & it fits perfect in the top part of lid & puts pressure on bottom part of button. tall angle pin top

So to boot up LOD backup with swop trick I need my LOD original disc or one that uses that same copy protection right?

But just to boot up flash Cheat Cart or make a FreePSXBoot with UniROM then remove after boot, it took 4 sec to pull top off & it fits perfect in the top part of lid & puts pressure on bottom part of button.

So to boot up LOD backup with swop trick I need my LOD original disc or one that uses that same copy protection right?

I think a pen spring is much easier and risk-free :).

What you would have to do is swap trick to boot Tonyhax boot cd then boot whatever game from there. It would otherwise still trip the protection.

Again, highly don't recommend that swap trick unless you have the CD Player Swap Trick compatible console where you swap when the disc is stopped in the CD player.

All other consoles should use the save game exploit or gshax or something like that.

where dose that leave people without PS2 consoles Are you getting this replay ? anyway of course I would NOT use swop trick I wanted to show its possible to flash a cart withOUT a PS2. as long as you have a Tonyhax international 1.2.4 -rom- or UniROM 8.0k CD you could just make #ONE make a FreePSXBoot memcard or #TWO flash Tonyhax onto a cheatcart depending what console you have, I found my second ps1 in attic would be nice to show how to softmod with out any other 🔧 🔨 other then a game. You and me have many ways to do this if someone finds PS1 at garage sale or win eBay lot would be nice to NOT need hook up another console.

You could purchase a PS3 memory card adapter (which can be used via a computer) without any PS2.

PS2 is still the main entrypoint though to get into these consoles. Unless you of course just buy a launch console with the CD Player Swap Trick. OR you could buy a PSX-Change v2 disc that then boots some other backup CD-R to get you going. Same deal with the GameShark Swap Tricks which don't involve moving discs (see bootcd page)!
