Epic 4G Wi-Fi Tether fights with native Sprint Hotspot #1157

Which device (manufacturer, type)? -
 Samsung Epic 4G

Which firmware is installed? -
 2.2.1 (Froyo? )

What version of wireless tether are you using?
 3.1-beta6

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Configure (and likely purchase?) the Wi-Fi Tethering service from Sprint
2. Discover Sprint's capping that service, get pissed, and install
"android-wifi-tether" to maintain promise of Sprint salesmen
3. Install 3.1-beta6 (as it's the only one I've found with an Epic
infrastructure mode).
4. Run 3.1-beta6
5. (I forget when this started, but here's where the problem starts)
5.a Due to previous problems with "Please wait while starting" NEVER starting,
*disable* Wifi Driver reload.
6. Try to start Wifi Tether again.
7. During "PLease wait while starting.." dialog, spinning disc stops.
8. "Wireless Tethering" shows up in title bar.
9. **WIFI HOTSPOT APP SHOWS UP IN TITLE BAR, saying "Activated"**, and
SOMETIMES disappears.
10. When connecting to network, phone provides no DHCP service, or DHCP service
is unreliable. (Can't get an IP on the network.)
11. DNS service also has failed.
12. Device usually fails after only 5kB of data is transferred-- this usually
coincides with when the 4G Network is enabled.
13. Activating Sprint Hotspot while Wi-Fi tether is running reboots the phone.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect it to work with no problems.

Please provide any additional information below.
I think we have a bunch of info up there-- let me know if there're any
questions.

I get sprint hotspot in the title bar when android-wifi-tether is activated...
I don't understand this because I am running a custom ROM. Sprint hotspot
software should not even be present on the phone. Why is it suddenly coming up
when I activate this program?

Well. The android-system checks if a certain interface-name comes up. If that
name is the same name like configured in the official hotspot-app your phone
*thinks* tethering is enabled and brings up this notification ...

If you use setup-method "ad-hoc"-mode the interface-name will be not like the
name which is expected by the hotspot-app and the notification won't pop-up.

You don't mean SSID, right? The SSID in the Wireless Tether is different than
the Sprint Hotspot app.

Also, Ad-hoc doesn't work for a bunch of peripherals, so it's necessary for us.
:(
