What worked for me is to add: gluqlo \n\ rather than gluqlo -root \n\ to the ~/.xscreensaver file
You may want to reopen this one. I am using Debian 9.1 and neither of those lines worked for me.
In both cases, after saving the .xscreensaver file and using the "less" command to view its contents, the added line was no longer there.
What worked for me was:
Create a copy of .xscreenshot (e.g., .xscreenshot.EDIT) Add the line "gluqlo -root \n\" Delete the original .xscreenshot (or save a backup, if desired) Rename the copy to .xscreenshot
Sounds like it's an xscreenshot issue rather than a gluqlo issue, but you may want to at least add it to your documentation.
