This would make the initial load experience a once off thing.

It seems like the DOM is blocked too severely by saving such a huge amount of data to localStorage. We can research more about localStorage and performance. But for now, it seems like adding Web Workers to handle the payload has significantly improved load performance and could live with this through going live.
