of late getting aufs3 to run on Gentoo kernels is less than pretty

union-fs-fuse is available seems overlayfs might be a future option as well. 

and might make things even easier  Linux 3.18.
plus of late Sabayon Linux or Genkernel next (and hopefully gentoo Images has 
em)

I'm afraid that aufs has the best performance, seriously better, than some 
fuse-based thing. But I'll think how to give a choose.
