BizHawk.exe 1.8.1 crashes quietly on startup #271

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Run prereq installer
2. Start EmuHawk.exe
3. Watch Task Manager, EmuHawk.exe eventually disappears. Nothing else appears
on the screen.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected output, should bring up a window. Instead nothing shows up.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
BizHawk 1.8.1 running on Windows 7 Home Premium, 32 bit

Please provide any additional information below.
I had .NET 4.5.1 installed, so I uninstalled it and rebooted my computer. Then
I ran the prereq installer and had it install the proper version of .NET. No
luck, so I rebooted again. Still no luck.

What graphics card. Are your graphics drivers up to date?

It's a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop, so whichever graphics card comes with that.
Most likely the Intel 945GM, and all drivers are up to date as far as I know.

Note: You didn't need to uninstall .net 4.5, all .net versions are compatible
and can co-exist.

Does your graphics card support opengl 2.0? That is a requirement to run bizhawk

I'm pretty sure it can, since OpenGL 2.0 came out in 2004 and my laptop was new
in 2006. I have no problems with other emulators like Fusion or MAME.

Just checked my OpenGL version, looks like it's 1.4.0. Guess I'll look into
upgrading it.

You can try and update the Video Drivers. Sometimes, you get OpenGL 2.0
support.

Nope, doesn't look like it. I updated the video drivers to the latest version
and OpenGL is still at 1.4.0. Looks like I'm SOL.

Maybe a suggestion could be to implement something where EmuHawk gives a
message like, "Your video card is not sufficient to run this application."
instead of just crashing quietly.

I've noticed something: Bizhawk crashes at startup if screen is not set to
32bits colors.
Maybe color depth is not ok for people noticing issues at startup even if they
have OpenGL 2.0 at least.

16 and 32 Bit are not factors for me. Tested on Windows XP against Version
1.9.1

If there are issues still, please make a new bug report.
