Crew automate ship management, allowing the player to focus on strategy. Also, practical implications such as being able to perform evasive maneuvers, fire weapons, and repair the hull at the same time.

Later, I envision crew members filling "posts" on the ship, to perform specific functions. Once a post is filled by a crew member, the captain can no longer perform manual tasks associated with that post, but must rather issue commands to the responsible crew member.
