Looks like you can associate contacts even within the same source, and then you'll see a single entry in Contacts with all the attributes combined from the linked contacts, but the original contact records with separate attributes still remain in the local AB database.
I don't see any equivalent of this on OSX. And I don't see anything explaining how the linkage information syncs to iCloud or if it will replicate to other devices.
There seems to be no immediate need to deal with this, but the Linked Contacts feature in iOS is bothering me:
