Hivemind wont launch after Windows 10 update #14

Was getting tired of the 5400rpm hard drive, bought a 500GB ssd and decided to do a fresh restore and then immediately updated to windows 10. Hive mind will not launch it was initially asking me to create a password for the account and then when i hit accept it would say that alphaconsole switch has crashed, i tried putting it in compatibility mode for windows 8 with no luck.

Next i tried installing version A10 and A11 to see if that would correct the issue, it does not. I am able to initially open HivemindUI but when selecting Console Mode it just gives me a "searching" spin. I can close hivemind at this point as the application still responds, it just will not get to the next screen which is to create a password for the Alpha Console user

I verified i am up to date and not missing any drivers, i am at a loss here what to do other than restore again and try over.

Have same issue myself,I had a power menu issue in hivemind where the menu wasn't working. So I decided to do afactory restore and start fresh clean hard drive ..see if my PC individually messed up or if I could reproduce power menu not working. But now I can't install hivemind and its stuck on spinning circle when selecting console mode. I checked drivers and updated gfe experience.

I'm having the same issue as well. I reinstalled Windows 10 from a USB thumb drive and installed all available updates for Windows and from Dell.

I downloaded the .63 hivemind software and installed it. It asked me to restart and I left the box checked that said to automatically launch the Hivemind UI. I sign in and it launches the UI with the Windows Taskbar still visible. I select console mode and let it sit while the circle spins. Hovering over the circle says it is searching.

I can click on the taskbar but nothing pops up or does anything. After a while I have to use my controller to select desktop mode for it to stop and allow me to use the desktop again. I have uninstalled the hivemind software for now until this can be resolved.

thexravenx linked to this from reddit, and asked for people to post here with similar issues, so I will share my post here too:

I recently got an Alpha with Windows 8.1 and decided to upgrade to Windows 10 soon afterwards. The older version of Hivemind that was still on the Alpha (.53 )after the upgrade no longer worked after the update. So I downloaded a newer version of Hivemind from Dell (.63) and tried that. The program starts up, but when I try to run Console mode it gets stuck with a loading circle and does not leave this state until I cancel the program with a press of the B button on the 360 controller. The controller does still function for typing on the pop up keyboard somewhat. But the analog stick no longer works in controlling mouse movement on the desktop.

After fresh Win-10 install did you install latest version of Alienware Command Center? If not, please try and let us know.

DeadEndJ commented 8 years ago

I did install Alienware Command Center that was on the dell website for the alienware alpha. It was listed in the Windows 8.1 section so I'm not sure if it was the most recent one but it is 4.0.48.0. Thankfully this piece works just fine. Afterwards, I another install of the Hivemind software and same result. Alpha rebooted into my main windows account, started Hivemind automatically from my desktop and when I click console mode nothing happens. Just an endless spinning circle that says searching when you hover the mouse pointer over it. I wanted to try rerunning the software in Windows 8.1 compatibility mode but unfortunately Windows 10 will only let me use Windows 8. Still got the same outcome though.

I had to restore to the initial image, reinstall everything and then reupdate to windows 10 to get it to work. I think the step that made it work here was i went through the console mode and setup the password and logged into the account before updating.

I think if you try to update straight to windows 10 before setting up the console mode account causes the issue.

I did not setup Hivemind console mode when I was running windows 8.1, I only tried setting it up after I upgraded to windows 10. So that might be a valid idea as to what the issue might be on my end.

It has been a while since the last comment, but since I ran into the same problem and was able to fix it, here's my findings. If Kodi was installed prior to HiveMind, then either uninstall Kodi then reinstall HiveMind (you may still have to run Kodi that was installed with HiveMind instead of the HiveMind launcher.), or try directly running Kodi that was manually installed.

For some reason, I noticed, the HiveMind launcher is not able to locate the Kodi executable.

I've just received a new Alienware Alpha from Dell. It came with Windows 10 installed and no HiveMind. I downloaded HiveMind Release A13 (3.0.7.63) from the dell support site and installed. When HiveMind starts, I select Console mode. No other actions occur outside of a loading spinner.

I'm having the same issue as berg0011. I've tried creating Alienware accounts for hivemind, tons of clean installs, etc. But nothing is working. New machine.

indidevelopers commented 8 years ago

This is a Windows update issue. The problem specifically deals with the windows kb update. If you have access to a Windows 10 media disc, try freshly installing Windows 10 and disable the updates (don't connect to the internet). Then install HiveMind and go back and enable all updates. This may allow HiveMind to run. We are very sorry for the inconvenience and diligently working on addressing this issue. There should be a new build available within the next few weeks.

I'm right there with you boys! I'm glad I'm not alone and in the same boat as y'all at the exact same time.

I don't understand how Alienware can sell something like this that doesn't work easily out of the box. If Kotaku/IGN/etc realized that they are selling sleek gaming pcs that have a lot of "assembly required" it would be damaging to their brand.

fissionch1ps commented 8 years ago

I'm glad to see you're actively working on this! I'm excited to finalize my Alienware Build with hivemind.

thexravenx commented 8 years ago

I hate that this issue has persisted so long but we have ran into un-expected delays in getting it fixed. It is being looked into and will be addressed post-haste.

I purchased the Alienware Steam machine and decided to wipe the drive and install windows 10. Hivemind worked before the updates but hqving the same problems as others and the reg edit isn't working. Any ideas what I can do without having to go through hours of another fresh install?

MototechRyan commented 8 years ago

Got it working. Bit the bullet and reinstalled windows 10 and drivers offline. Then loaded hivemind before connecting to the internet for the first time...in order to avoid the windows updates before installing hivemind. Now to copy over my steam library, wheee.
